By joining Rolls-Royce, you'll have the opportunity to work on world-class solutions, supported by a culture that believes individuality is our greatest strength, and all perspectives, experiences and backgrounds help us innovate and enable our high-performance culture.

What you will be doing

The SSN-AUKUS programme is setting out to deliver submarines on a scale never seen before in the UK.  The SSNA Whole Plant Team are accountable for design and delivery of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant.  Within the engineering team we are responsible for defining the engineering strategy, programmes of work and technical governance.  We also support co-ordination between the submarines enterprise partners: Rolls-Royce, the Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems, and Babcock Marine.

As a SSNA Fluid System Engineer within the Whole Plant Team, you will be responsible for defining the system design and operational behaviour & procedures for the primary reactor plant systems.  This is achieved through using systems engineering approaches to define the systems architecture and component requirements. You will need to use these tools to robustly manage the system’s functional and physical integration into the remainder of the nuclear steam raising plant as well as the wider submarine.  As the system owner, you will also be responsible for the assessment, substantiation and safety case for the systems

The SSNA Fluid Systems Engineer will have the following responsibilities.

  • Resolve problems through evaluative judgements and through the application and understanding of standard methods. Analyse factual information from multiple sources, interpret results and identify effective solutions by applying their own technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.

  • Work within a team and be responsible for defined technical packages of work providing leadership and delivery against customer programme milestones with agreed costs, timescales and quality requirements.

  • Work with our Submarines Enterprise partners: BAE Systems, MoD, Babcock Marine to provide innovative solutions to meet the SSNA programme outcomes such as improving submarine availability.

  • Understand the company’s business objectives and ensure that the work you do supports this. To act in accordance with both the company’s values and those associated with being a professional engineer. Identify and implement continuous improvement ideas both within and outside your immediate sphere and prompt action across the wider team.

  • An experienced engineer, ideally within nuclear, or within a heavily regulated industry.

  • Experience of design, justification, and safety case production of complex engineering systems.

  • A good understanding of fundamental engineering principles and able to make rational risk-based decisions using analysis, empirical data and engineering judgement and experience.

  • Proactive, persistent and customer focused with a high level of self-motivation and initiative, and able to stand-alone.

  • The ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and influence a broad range of stakeholders, both internal and external, to deliver the business and project outcomes.

  • Be a challenging force to enable simplification and improvements to achieve business and programme outcomes.

  • Strong planning and organising skills to manage short-, medium- and long-term activities and deliverables.
